Basic Sweater & Beanie for 18″ Doll

Burning the midnight oil to write up the pattern for this little sweater and beanie set I have been making for quite a while now. I just love it! Try out this quick and easy pattern for you favorite doll. Model is wearing a sweater made using Caron Simply Soft yarn, but this turns out extra cute using Red Heart Gumdrop yarn.

MATERIALS:

  • 1 skein medium 4-ply yarn such as Caron Simply Soft, Red Heart Gumdrop, etc.
  • F /3.75 mm Crochet Hook
  • Plastic Yarn Needle
  • 3 Buttons for sweater
  • Optional embellishments for beanie

STITCHES:

  • Ch = chain
  • Sc = single Crochet
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Sl st = slip stitch
  • V-Stitch = dc, ch1, dc

SWEATER INSTRUCTIONS

Row 1: Ch 44.

Row 2: Corrected! Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 3 ch, V-stitch in next ch, dc in next 9 ch, V-stitch in next ch, dc in next 10 ch, V-stitch in next ch, dc in next 9 ch, V-stitch in next ch, dc in next 5 ch. Total of 38 dc, (counting the first ch three) and 4 V- stitches.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), Turn. Dc in next 5 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 11 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 12 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 11 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 6 dc. Total of 46 dc and 4 V-stitches.

Row 4: Ch 3, turn. Dc in next 6 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 13 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 14 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 13 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in last 7 stitches. Total of 54 dc and 4 V-stitches.

Row 5: Ch 3, turn. Dc in next 7 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 15 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 16 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 15 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in last 8 stitches. Total of 62 dc and 4 V-stitches.

Row 6: Ch 3, turn. Dc in next 8 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 17 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 18 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 17 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in last 9 stitches. Total of 70 dc and 4 V-stitches.

Row 7: Ch 3, turn. Dc in next 9 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 19 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 20 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in next 19 dc, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, dc in last 10 stitches. Total of 78 dc and 4 V-stitches.

Row 8: Ch 3, turn. Dc in next 10 dc, fold to align the first two V-stitches and dc through both of them to make arm hole, dc in next 22 dc, fold to align the next two V-stitches and dc through both of them to make arm hole, dc in next 11 dc. Total of 46 dc.

Rows 9-11: Ch 3, turn. Dc in next 45 dc across. Total of 46 dc per row. Do NOT fasten off….

BUTTON BANDS

Button Band: Ch 1, 2 sc in end of each of the next five dc/ch 3 rows along right side of sweater opening. (Total of 20 sc) Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across with 3 sc in the last corner stitch. Total of 22 sc.

Bottom Edge of Sweater: Sc in each dc across the bottom of the sweater. Total 46 sc.

Button Hole Band: Ch 1, 2 sc in each of next five dc/ch 3 rows up left side of sweater, *ch 3, 2 sc in end of next two dc/ch 3 rows*. Repeat from * to * one more time, ch 3, 2sc in end of next dc row. Total of 20 dc and three ch-3 loops.

COLLAR

Row 1: Sc into same stitch as the last sc of left button hole band. Sc in each stitch across the collar. Total of 45 sc. (If you don’t want an actual collar, fasten off and trim.)

Row 2 through 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn. Dc in each stitch along collar. Total of 45 per row.

After Row 4, fasten off and trim.

Use needle and thread to attach three ½ inch buttons to correspond with the three button holes.

BEANIE INSTRUCTIONS: If your doll has a well-loved, wild hairdo, you may want to use a larger hook OR start with 10 dc in the beginning loop OR make additional increasing rounds.

Round 1: Make a Magic Adjustable Loop. Ch 3 (counts as dc throughout pattern), then 7 dc into Magic Adjustable Loop join with sl st at the top of ch 3. Pull ring closed. Total of 8 dc.

Round 2: Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. Dc into same dc as beginning ch 3. Join with sl st at the top of the ch 3. Total of 16 dc.

Round 3: Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times, 2 dc in next dc. Join with sl st at the top of the ch 3. Total of 24 dc.

Round 4: Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc*. Repeat from * to * 6 more times. 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc. Join with sl st at the top of the ch 3. Total of 32 dc.

Rounds 5 through 10: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. Total of 32 dc each round.

Round 11: Ch 1, sc in each dc around. Join with sl st in beginning sc. Total of 32 sc. Fasten off and Trim.

Embellish your beanie with flowers, buttons, or a pompom on top!
