Autumn Beanie in Half Double Crochet

Comfy autumn beanie made with half double crochet stitch. Also, see the Video Project.

MATERIALS:

  • 1 skein Premium Yarn — Red Heart with Love Stripes. Model is wearing Big Twist Premium yarn.
  • J / 6.00 mm Crochet Hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Plastic yarn needle

STITCHES:

  • Magic Adjustable Loop — see tutorial
  • ch — chain
  • Sc — single crochet
  • hdc — half double crochet
  • sl st — slip stitch

INSTRUCTIONS — Ch 2 at the beginning of each round counts as a hdc throughout.

Round 1: Make Magic Adjustable Loop. ch 2. crochet 7 hdc into the loop. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 8 hdc including the ch 2.

Round 2: ch 2, 2 hdc in each of next 7 hdc, 1hdc in same stitch as ch 2. Join in with sl st in top of the ch 2. Total of 16 hdc, including the ch 2.

Round 3: ch 2, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc*. Repeat between * 6 more times. 2 hdc in next hdc. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 24 hdc including the ch 2.

Round 4: ch 2, * 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc*. Repeat between * 6 more times. 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in the next hdc. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 32 hdc including the ch 2.

Round 5: ch 2, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc*. Repeat between * 6 more times. 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 hdc. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 40 total hdc including the ch 2.

Round 6: ch 2, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc*. Repeat between * 6 more times. 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 hdc. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 48 total hdc including initial ch 2.

Round 7: ch 2, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc*. Repeat between * 6 more times. 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 hdc. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 56 hdc including initial ch 2.

Round 8: ch 2, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 6 hdc*. Repeat between * 6 more times. 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 hdc. Join with sl st into the top of the ch 2. Total of 64 total hdc including initial ch 2.

An average adult beanie should measure approximately 7 inches through the middle at this point. Add or take away rounds to achieve this measurement. You may adjust this measurement by using a larger or smaller crochet hook as well.

Round 9: ch 2, hdc in each hdc around. Join with hdc into the top of the ch 2 at the beginning of round. Place stitch marker in joining stitch.

Rounds 10 through 18: hdc in each hdc around in a spiral fashion. Move stitch marker up one as you begin each new round. Add or subtract rounds to achieve approximately 7 1/2 inches from top of crown to bottom edge of beanie.

Rounds 19 – 21: sc in each hdc around. Continue in a spiral pattern, moving stitch marker up to next round. Join with sl st into sc with marker. Fasten off. Trim.

NOTE: The average completed adult beanie should measure approximately 8 inches from top of crown to bottom edge of beanie.
